Christianity and Socialism

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Sometimes, I get ideas for articles, and jot some quick notes down because I am not in a position to write out the articles, but I don't want to forget the idea.  Then, the notes, when I get home, get placed on a stack on the left side of my desk.  Sometimes I use those notes, and sometimes some of them remain on that stack, until much later, possibly years later, I find those notes again.

The following was inspired by one of those old notes.

Christianity and Socialism

If you read ACTS in the Bible, you learn that the early church attempted a style of communal living, but it failed badly.  Paul had to go around collecting from other churches to save the church in Jerusalem.  This experiment in socialism runs contrary to the Christian Faith.  Salvation is an individual, voluntary decision based on one's personal decision.

I don't think that was an experiment in socialism, but rather the most expedient short term way to deal with the temporary situation created by the numbers of people who had been suddenly converted at and shortly after Pentecost. People who wanted to stick around and learn more about Jesus and His ministry and to become actively involved in spreading the gospel.
In addition, this was a voluntary effort. That is a significant difference from socialism where all are required to do as the government says or be punished.
